Private 11,000 Volt substation

The datacentre is connected directly to United Utilities' local 11,000 Volt ring main, with two separately routed incoming high Voltage cables. We have a dedicated 1 Megawatt substation onsite, protecting us from most common disturbances in the local distribution network. As well as providing us with isolation from other local power users, it provides us with the massive amount capacity needed for running several thousand servers in the datacentre.
N+1 UPS Protection
All critical services in the datacentre (ie servers and network equipment) are protected by a sophisticated Riello N+1 Uninterruptable Power Supply system. This system is made up of a number of individual units configured in a decentralised paralleled fashion, removing any potential SPoF (single point of failure). In this instance N+1 means that where we might, for example, require 5 units to accommodate the required load, we would install 6 units to protect against any failure in one of the units. These are online double-conversion units, meaning they are constantly filtering and conditioning power (smoothing spikes etc) to prevent damage to other hardware in the datacentre. In the event of any disruption in the mains supply, the UPS cluster's internal battery units provide 10 minutes of immediate uninterrupted power protection. These 10 minutes are intended to allow our backup diesel generators to start up and provide power indefinitely.

Diesel Generators

In the event of a prolonged mains power supply failure, our backup diesel generators automatically start-up and assume the full load of the building. Each half-megawatt SDMO unit is powered by a large internal Volvo engine. The generators are capable of providing full power to all building electrical services such as cooling, server room, lighting and office hardware etc. We have sufficient on-site fuel storage to provide 48 hours of generator runtime, and have contracts in place for additional fuel deliveries within 4 hours 24/7/365 allowing us to continue full operation in the event of a major long-term power outage.

Rack Distribution

The power for each 47u and 11u equipment rack in the datacentre is provided by two 16A or 32A 'commando' sockets mounted under the raised floor. Each rack 'footprint' is individually fed directly from the pod's distribution board and protected by a dedicated 16A or 32A MCB circuit-breaker. This ensures that in the unlikely event of an electrical fault in one of the racks, the fault is isolated and prevents other major 'upstream' breakers tripping and causing unnecessary disruption to other server racks. A full 'dark' test of the power system is performed once per month in order to verify all systems are operating correctly. This test involves simulating a full mains failure, by cutting the main incoming power supply. We are so confident in the stability and reliability of our power system that most colocation contracts include a 100% Service Level Agreement, which provides a financial credit back to the customer in the unlikely of any power issues in the datacentre.

VESDA Fire Detection

VESDA stands for 'Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus'. VESDA is a highly advanced smoke detection system which works by continuously actively drawing air samples from the monitored area through a network of sampling pipes throughout the room into a sampling unit. A laser beam is fired through each air sample in order to analyse the particles present. The fire alert level is then increased or decreased depending on the type and concentration of particles found.

FM200 Fire Suppression Gas

Upon detection of a fire FM200 fire suppression gas is automatically discharged into the affected room. There are separate FM200 systems in place for the main data room, and the UPS plant room. Chemically known as Heptafluoropropane, FM-200 is a compound of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen that will completely extinguish Class A, B and C fires in seconds. FM-200 works by physically cooling the fire at the molecular level. It belongs to the same class of compounds used in refrigeration and, as such, is an effective heat transfer agent. FM-200 literally removes heat from the fire to the extent that the combustion reaction cannot sustain itself. FM-200 is colourless, odourless and electrically non-conductive. Like all clean agents, it leaves no residue, eliminating costly after-fire clean up.

LINX, AMXIS and DECIX Connectivity

LINX (the London Internet Exchange) is the most important Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in the UK, and arguably the most important in Europe. GlobalAXS is an approved 'LINX From Anywhere (LFA)' carrier, and is therefore one of only a handful of UK operators permitted to provide backhaul connectivity to LINX from out of London. We are able to provide connectivity to LINX, AMSIX and DECIX at our Manchester datacentre.

Manchester Network

We operate a very extensive high-capacity network within Manchester. Our datacentre benefits from two diversely routed deep-buried fibre ducts, with entry points at two different parts of the building. There is a fully diversely routed dark-fibre ring in operation which connects us to IFL2, Telecity Williams House and Telecity Kilburn House, with active network equipment at each of these sites. This ring is currently operating at 20Gbps and additional capacity can be made available very quickly and easily. This massive capacity allows us to offer extremely cost-effective solutions.

UK National Network

Between the main connectivity hubs in Manchester (ie Telecity Kilburn and Williams) and London (ie Telehouse East and North) we operate multiple 10Gigabit wavelength circuits on two separately routed national paths - one route via Leeds and one via Birmingham. These circuits terminate into different buildings within each city and share no common infrastructure end-to-end whatsoever.

European Network

We operate major European POP sites in Manchester, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Belgium, Paris and Prague. All POP sites generally consist of at least one Cisco 7600 router are interconnected by our diversely routed 10G wavelength ring. There are at least two 10Gigabit backhaul connections at each site. We are able to accommodate all our connectivity services at each POP - including public and private peering interconnects. With our approval, colocation customers are permitted to bring third-party communication circuits into their racks within our Manchester facility from any other operator - such as BT, NTL, KCOM, Cable & Wireless etc. A number of these operators already have a network presence within the datacentre - contact us for details.
